FIC: Secrets and Lies - Anakin/Obi-Wan/Padmé - PG
TITLE: Secrets and Lies
AUTHOR: agentj / [info]agentjedi
CHALLENGE: [info]30for3
CLAIM: Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padmé Amidala
THEMESET/PROMPT: One; #12 Alone
RATING: PG
DATE WRITTEN: August 2005, August 2007
TIMEFRAME: During Revenge of the Sith
SUMMARY: Padmé loses both men in her life on the last day of the Old Republic.
CONTENT WARNING: none
WORD COUNT: 492
AUTHOR'S NOTE: This story is a prelude to my story for prompt #26 Hidden. Also note that Anakin and Padmé thought they were having only one child, not twins.

"I'm here looking for Anakin." Obi-Wan's lips were moving. Padmé could see that. She heard words strung together that sounded like his voice, but they were disjointed, unreal. "When was the last time you saw him?"

The image of a troubled Anakin swam before her eyes, his muscled form slumped against the silhouette of darkness surrounding him...surrounding them all.

"Yesterday," she answered.

She could feel Obi-Wan gently pushing against her with his will. Outwardly, he didn't show it, but Padmé could taste it like metal in her mouth. Obi-Wan was afraid.

"And do you know where he is now?"

Unable to look into his eyes, she knew he would not rip the truth from her with his power even if he wanted to. Padmé lied. "No."

"Padmé, I need your help. He's in grave danger."

The Temple. Burning. Anakin...alive.

"From the Sith?" She turned and confronted him.

"From himself...." His desperation reached out for her, the edges frayed with tattered hope. Trying to hold on to the last good thing he'd ever known, he served his last sarlaac card. "Padmé, Anakin has turned to the Dark Side."

Without thinking, Padmé knew what he said was true, but shrugged him off anyway. "You're wrong! How could you even say that?"

Obi-Wan offered nothing less than the cold truth. "I have seen a security hologram of him...killing younglings."

"Not Anakin! He couldn't!" Padmé's world spun wildly out of control. Anakin alive...Anakin in danger.... Anakin...a murderer.

Nothing could stop the torrent streaming from Obi-Wan now. "He was deceived by a lie. We all were. It appears that the Chancellor is behind everything, including the war. Palpatine is the Sith Lord we've been looking for. After the death of Count Dooku, Anakin became his new apprentice."

Lies! Blaspheme! "I don't believe you.... I can't!"

Padmé sat as her mind reeled. Echoing in its fear, her baby kicked in frustration.

Unable to give up his quest, Obi-Wan sat beside her. "Padmé, I must find him."

The truth finally took hold. "You're going to kill him, aren't you?"

There was pain in Obi-Wan's eyes, deeper than the waters reflected within. "He has become a very great threat."

The war...the deaths...the deceit...all of it lay exposed to her now, like the soft underbelly of a kayt dragon. The Separatists were the reason for the war. Who were controlled by Count Dooku. Who was controlled by the Sith. Who was the Chancellor. Who had control of Anakin.

There were no more secrets to hide, none that could hinder more. As Obi-Wan stood and lingered a moment, he looked down on her, and the last secret bore itself to the light.

"Anakin is the father, isn't he?"

The realisation of Padmé's true deception cut deeper in Obi-Wan's voice than a Jedi's sabre.

"I'm so sorry."

With desperate finality, Obi-Wan had left her just as Anakin had the night before, and Padmé was alone.

I haven't posted any new stories for quite some time. These are from a while back, so maybe they've scrolled away on your f-list. Look at it this way--you got a whole bunch of stories all at once!

I'm still working on the sequel to this one.
